BRIDGES
Goldseal is the only coating available that can link and seal a bridge’s dissimilar components in an active, penetrating and encapsulating barrier coat.
All bridges are assembled out of a variety of substrates and fittings, with their lifespan depending on how well this combination of products resists corrosion. When structural elements are new they tend to last for approximately 20 years before water or contaminants create corrosion cells — which often happens at the connection points of these assets. While corrosion might be hardly visible, it accelerates fast, eating away at load or stress points or getting into areas that expand, contract and vibrate. Often, whole structures are replaced due to just 10% of critical corrosion damage.
As a leading corrosion control option, Goldseal’s cost-effective IHS is one of very few coatings that preserves whole structures by encapsulating dissimilar elements, and protecting and sealing weak points that begin to appear. It has been applied to bridge bearings in confined spaces for many years and is recommended by international consultants for its ability to be applied with little surface preparation. Goldseal IHS has no low temperature cure issues or health and safety issues involving solvents, catalysts or VOC toxicity.
How can you avoid costly bridge maintenance?
If left untreated, unwashed corrosion zones can blow maintenance budgets. Rain shadows lead to unwashed environments that are covered in marine salt, agriculture fertiliser from topdressing, or wind blown elements from local industry. Because handrails get washed by rain yet bridge undersides do not, white acrylic is great for handrail maintenance but rust often develops underneath bridges. When this happens, it’s difficult to assess what should be done. What might seem like a full bridge replacement solution may not be the case, with Goldseal IHS able to cost-effectively extend its service life.
Grey District Council NZ – Sir Stanley Gooseman bridge
“I would not hesitate to use Goldseal on bridge maintenance and would in fact specify it as a system to protect various parts of structures”
Coastal bridge in Coromandel, New Zealand
Over 20 years after Goldseal was first applied, there is no major corrosion, peeling, flaking, or loss of steel. Even in this unwashed environment there has been no timber degradation or nut and flange corrosion, and the steel to timber seal remains intact. Although the coating is still active, Goldseal Cold Spray can be applied for spot maintenance.
Goldseal optimises the lifespan of bridges
An encapsulating barrier coat of Goldseal on the subframe and a new deck is a cost-effective, all-in-one solution that kills, passivates and prevents bridge corrosion, taking the pressure off maintenance budgets. Once an initial coat of Goldseal is applied, maintenance gets cheaper with every additional application — which we recommend every 15 years, based on inspection. Before coating, our team of trained professionals use the Elcometer 138 Bresle Salt Kit to measure the level of contaminants on a surface. This ensures the quality of the coating performance and that its optimum lifetime is achieved.
Solid in the drum with an unlimited shelf life
Not dangerous: it is solvent and catalyst free
Sprayed hot, setting on contact to produce a film that’s 97% solid with 2.9% VOC
Effective at any film build — with a target of 350 to 700
Moisture displacing: it can be applied at high or low temperatures and is spill recyclable
How to inspect a Goldseal bridge in 3 steps
If areas of concern arise — like potential hairline cracks, underlying corrosion cells or the drying out of a Goldseal coating — these steps help reveal raw steel for easier inspection.
1. Scrape the area with a generic paint scraper
2. Melt away residual residue with a heat or steam gun
3. Wipe down the area with a solvent covered rag
If maintenance is required after inspection, localised areas can easily be touched up with Goldseal Cold Spray.
